ABOUT SAVA

Sava S. Tangral is a Bulgarian-Lebanese expat doing her Ph.D. in Beijing, China. Having grown up between Bulgaria, Lebanon, the UK, and South Korea, she is now lost to the world, accepting she will never truly belong to one culture.

In trying to navigate the unfathomable reality that is living, she has crafted a grounding routine of regular consumption of matcha lattes, feeding a near-fanatic obsession with C-dramas and anime, partaking in systematic and scheduled visits to museums to stare at cultural heritage and make herself feel bad about “not having achieved enough,” and, of course, engaging in heated discussions with the characters of her Universe (especially Calamity).

She hopes, through her work, to create a brighter world, since, given the current political landscape (her research major), we all need at least a sprinkle of light.

Fun Facts About Sava

01. Art has always been deeply connected to Sava’s soul and way of learning about the world. She has spent a significant part of her adult life in museums and art galleries. One of those visits led her to her husband, proving that the soul knows better; we just need to learn to listen.

02. Sava has always wanted a dog. But she’s stuck with a cat (she loves him, don’t misunderstand). Why, might you ask? Well, dogs over 35cm in height are not allowed within the central rings of the city of Beijing. And... well... a labrador is definitely above 35cm tall.

03. Literally obsessed with matcha, Sava has created her own ranking system in her hunt for the best matcha drinks and desserts in the world. Depth, strength, earthiness, the way the matcha combines with sweeteners, color, region of origin—all are incredibly important. Her favorite dessert is matcha tiramisu, which she’s spent over 6 years perfecting the recipe for.
